“Dr. Ames is a wonderful doctor. He takes his time, listens well, and knows his stuff. With a few questions, asking me to do a test, looking at first an x-ray, then suggesting an MRI, which a follow-up appointment confirmed what the cause of my current issues is, he then gave me the information, in understandable language and diagrams, and took time answering my questions. I highly recommend him.”

“Dr. Ames did a wonderful job ensuring he facilitated a thorough discussion between us. I recently fell, and it caused me to experience a wide range of physical symptoms, which added to (and worsened) the pain that I already receive treatment for via pain management services. A couple of months prior to the fall that landed me in Dr. Ames’ office for a consult, I had just completed a series of procedures via pain management to help keep my pain as minimal as possible. When opting to consult with Dr. Ames, I knew I would not be eligible to repeat the procedures I received via pain management anytime soon, even if they may indeed need repeating due to my recent fall triggering both new & old symptoms. The thought of being stuck in any additional pain (and not knowing how long it would take for the pain to subside) had me feeling extremely overwhelmed & defeated when I walked in for my consult with Dr. Ames. Frankly, chronic pain patients don’t cry easily when we experience new injuries, no more than we experience high blood pressure when in pain, etc., as we are accustomed to learning how to appear/behave relatively normal, despite being in excruciating pain that would cause the average person to be outwardly symptomatic/disheveled. Unfortunately, sometimes this can result in doctors outside of the pain management clinic to quickly dismiss & undermine the amount of pain we are truly experiencing. Although I may have seemed pleasant & calm on the outside when consulting with Dr. Ames, on the inside, I was feeling very overwhelmed & frustrated with the circumstances I was in, which made me struggle to communicate effectively on my own. Thankfully, Dr. Ames both carefully & patiently listened to me. He also took the time to ask me questions that permitted me to confirm/deny symptoms, versus him assuming/documenting that I denied those symptoms just because I personally failed to report the sign. This approach permitted me to report symptoms I would have failed to mention, despite truly experiencing those symptoms. This permitted Dr. Ames to see the purpose in ordering MRIs after the X-rays he took came back clean. Since my symptoms are happening on/off and causing me only to pay full attention to the signs I’m struggling with presently, I forgot to report symptoms that I was experiencing, just not at that exact moment in time. Although it may seem that Dr. Ames was “just doing his job” by how effectively he facilitated & ensured thorough communication, I would strongly disagree that many doctors do a thorough job communicating with patients, especially with chronic pain patients. Dr. Ames didn’t seem annoyed or frustrated with the task assigned to him, which I know I’m a very complicated pain patient. Instead, he shocked me when he met the task with compassion, enthusiasm & humility all rolled into one. I’ve been struggling with chronic pain since age 12 due to Endometriosis that went significantly undermined by my doctors for decades. Then, doctors undermined and misdiagnosed my Interstitial Cystitis for two decades too. In addition, the symptoms I reported for 15 years, which showed I was struggling with every symptom of Graves Disease imaginable (just minus the budging eyes & goiter), went undermined & misdiagnosed until I went into a thyroid storm, a life-threatening condition that comes on rather quickly once you enter the severe stages of the disease. All I can say is that it has been a very long time since I’ve come across a doctor that impressed in the ways that Dr. Ames impressed me. Dr. Ames didn’t work hard at convincing me to use mind over matter when he failed to have answers, but responsibly & enthusiastically became busy with the task of investigating any new pain that I claimed to need his attention. Dr. Ames did his job in a way that I don’t often see doctors do anymore. It was refreshing to see. I actually left the appointment feeling lighter emotionally because I knew I was in good hands with Dr. Ames. I can’t say that happens to me often, not when I meet with new doctors outside the team of doctors that I spent decades carefully selecting for myself anyway. Now, I only choose to stick with doctors that do not annoy me with their overinflated egos, despite all my current doctors having every right to have an ego if they wanted to flaunt one anyway. With that being said. The least I could do to thank Dr. Ames for making my initial consult with him such a refreshing experience is to respond to the email I received asking me to review my experience at Reconstructive Orthopedics. Dr. Ames has a pleasant personality & disposition, along with a great bedside manner, and he clearly still enjoys his craft with a sense of enthusiasm. I truly wish that wasn’t so hard to come by nowadays.”
